The Relationship between the D-Book and Digital UK's Freeview connected service

Clarification on the relationship between the interoperability specification for digital terrestrial television in the UK (DTG D-Book) and the Freeview connected platform interoperability specification (Digital UK Project—Freeview Connected TV Platform)

Dear DTG Member,

The Digital TV Group (DTG) in its capacity as the industry association for digital television in the UK has and continues to publish the D-Book, which is the detailed interoperability specification for digital terrestrial television in the UK and sets out the technical requirements for the Freeview and Freeview HD trademark licences. As an interoperability specification, the D-Book defines both the delivery and reception of services. It also includes the interoperability requirements for IP services delivered using the current MHEG based, Red Button, interactive TV mechanisms. The version of the D-Book (7 Version 4) which was published in May 2014 incorporates the following clarifications and amendments:

l TV White Space informative note on coexistence testing
l Introduction of a new RF test (PLP_ID)
l "und" audio handling and removal of remote booking feature SI chapter 8 -
l Audio Description requirements
l Receiver requirements (Chapter 22)
l General introduction update

You may be aware that the shareholders of Digital UK (BBC, ITV, CH4, and Arqiva) are developing an extension to the existing Freeview HD platform to include a common set of on demand services. The technical requirements for this platform will build on the foundation on the D-Book and Freeview HD requirements and be published in a separate specification by Digital UK.

It is anticipated that the DTG will publish D-Book 8 later in 2014 which will be designed to enable the seamless implementation of both the broadcast services defined in the DTG D-Book and the new Digital UK, HbbTV based, Freeview Connected Specification.
